Hatch Detroit is a vehicle to champion and support independent retail businesses through funding, education, exposure and mentoring.

Founded in 2011, Hatch Detroit was created to give others the opportunity to have a role in the redevelopment of Detroit. The Contest was built on an idea called “Crowd Entrepreneurship” where residents have a role in voting for the type of retail they want in their community and determining the winner of the Hatch Contest. Since 2011, 6 winners (7th coming soon!) have been announced, and 33 Hatch Alumni businesses have opened up storefronts.

Now in its 8th year, Hatch Detroit will continue to bring some of the most celebrated retail options to Detroit, Hamtramck & Highland Park. In 2014, Hatch Detroit expanded its retail role into 6 neighborhoods in Detroit with our “Neighborhood Initiative”.  We partnered with local Community Development Corporations (CDC’s) to determine an area of focus in its retail nodes that was already identified by its residents in their master plan.  Examples Include improvements in signage, interior lighting, window displays, and outdoor beautification projects all geared to improving retail.

“I moved back home to Detroit after 7 years in Chicago in order to do my part to revitalize the city and the region I love. During the day I am a lawyer at Honigman, where I also serve as the hiring partner (trying to attract and retain talent in Michigan) and co-chair of the pro bono committee (trying to make sure all our lawyers give back to those most in need). At night I relax by chugging coffee and spending five hours trying to figure out how to Hatch businesses.”
