27th Letter Books
Erin & Drew Pineda

27th Letter Books is an independent bookstore with the mission to connect and inspire
people through stories. We carry new, general interest books that are carefully curated to
highlight excellent writing and underrepresented voices. In our permanent retail space, we will
also offer rental of an audio recording room. By offering customers the opportunity to shop
locally for books and a place to record their own stories, we provide a physical and personalized
experience that cannot be replicated online or through chain or big box stores. Customers can
peruse the shelves, delight in learning something new, feel the comfort of nostalgia when they
recognize a favorite title, and walk away reaffirmed, knowing they belong to a community with
shared values. Our name, 27th Letter Books, comes from the ampersand symbol (&) and
reflects these shared values. The ampersand—once considered the 27th letter of the
alphabet—developed as a combination of the letters e and t from the Latin word et meaning
“and.” In its history we see a symbol of coming together, transformation, and persistence. It
represents creation, adaptation, and the continuing nature of language and of life.

Participating in the Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest is a remarkable opportunity to
deepen our roots in Detroit and its community of creative entrepreneurs. As Air Force veterans,
we have lived and traveled across the world, exploring what it means to belong. Michigan is the
first place we have ever chosen as our home, and we are immensely thankful for the ability to
share and further our dream through a contest built to support the local community. The seed of
27th Letter Books was planted five years ago, as newlyweds, when Drew faced an aggressive
cancer diagnosis. Navigating his treatment and recovery as a young couple shaped our
perspective on creating meaning in life. Through the nourishment of community, 27th Letter
Books has grown to be a sapling. We envision our bookstore as a community space where
neighborhood residents can enjoy a quiet afternoon, work on a creative writing project, or meet
with friends. We seek to host a multigenerational community of customers, ranging from
children and students to adults and retirees. The bookstore will grow by continually reinvesting
in the community: hosting author events, youth educational programming, and book clubs our
neighborhood residents are interested in, and by stocking titles that speak to our community’s
diverse backgrounds and experiences. 27th Letter Books is a bookstore that cultivates
imagination. The ability to envision a better place—a better world, a better Detroit, and a better
neighborhood—is vital to the city’s self-determination. When customers and voters support us,
they contribute to a gathering-place in Detroit and create a microphone for those who dare to
