OVERVIEW

Did you know that Detroit is becoming a hot bed of fashion, and desperately in need of a garment district dedicated to the support and encouragement of apparel businesses?  Well it’s true, and the WORKROOM is hoping to take the first step!

The goal of the WORKROOM is to establish a space that is more than just a retail space.  The concept would emphasize fashion and apparel from the sample/product development phase, all the way through to the retail storefront.  The WORKROOM could become a model for other independent design labels to use, as they improve upon the structure of their own businesses.  Development of these types of label facilities builds toward distribution, which then leads to a demand for production needs.  Those key factors create the district and push it to thrive.

THE TEAM

The connection between fashion professionals is strong in Detroit, and the WORKROOM hopes to build on that by increasing the  number of opportunities to work in the industry.

Fotoula Lambros – Owner/Principal/Creative Director

Fotoula Lambros, is a Metropolitan Detroit native, CEO of Fotoula Lambros Design, Fashion Group International- Detroit Board Member, and community activist.  Fotoula began her design career as early as the age of 16 under instruction from Austrian Bespoke Tailor, Horst Greissier.  From there, her interest and design knowledge has grown and her newest interests include the use of only Natural Fibers, and environmentally thoughtful production of garments.  Fotoula has had many opportunities to showcase her work over the last decade.  From styling different hair/fashion shows prior to her graduation from International Academy of Design and Technology, to soon after beginning her first clothing label, with a friend, in 2007.  After founding, grassroots street couture label Femilia, the future was bright, with many different Fashion related events and different collaborations filled the years the designers worked together.

The newest independent venture from Fotoula is filled with fashion forward pieces that not only have a unique look, but the concept of each piece is to focus only on natural fibers, that uses the majority of fabric in each design to eliminate excess waste in garment production.  Each piece is unique, and most of the pieces of the new 2011/12 collections, has the ability to be worn many different ways.  For example, the Convertible tank has an attached neckline piece that allows for up to 21 different looks.  This is a true example of Fotoula’s design aesthetic.  Fiber fluidly meets function.  Fashion need not be fussy, but be able to move with each person who wears each piece is a priority for Fotoula as a designer
