OVERVIEW
Inspired by the men’s magazines of the 50s and 60s, Hugh is a store that offers Detroiters a place to find cool stuff for sophisticated living.
With one foot firmly rooted in mid-century “Mad Men” style and the other firmly in the present, Hugh is a store that offers a contemporary take on classic bachelor pad style. Hugh sells all kinds of housewares – glassware, bar and smoking accessories, personal effects, books, furniture, lighting and cool home accessories – with a general masculine focus. But despite its manly appeal, Hugh offers something for everyone.
If Hugh sounds familiar, it may be because of its far-reaching reputation as the first pop-up shop in the region. First in the Fall of 2009, then again in 2010 as a holiday season pop-up with a winter ski holiday bent. In the world of risky retail ventures in Detroit this model has already proven itself twice. The new and improved plan is to make Hugh a full-time shop!

THE TEAM
Joe Posch – Owner
Joe was born in Detroit, and raised on the east side and in Grosse Pointe. He graduated from University of Detroit Jesuit High School, and then earned a bachelors degree in Education from Boston College.
A series of serendipitous events led Joe to open Mezzanine in 1998. Mezzanine was a shop located in Ann Arbor that specialized in classic modern and contemporary furniture, lighting, and accessories. In 2005, Joe moved Mezzanine to Downtown Detroit, where he was part of a wave of entrepreneurs working to change perceptions about the retail environment in the city.
Mezzanine converted to an online-only store in late 2009, at which time Joe introduced Hugh, the first “pop-up” store in Southeastern Michigan. Hugh offered a selection of lower-priced merchandise with great style and broad appeal. It enjoyed a very successful six-month run, and then “popped up” again in December 2010 for the holidays.

I vote for Hugh! It’s curatorial style, a la Detroit’s hey-day, takes us back to our roots. Also appreciate that repurposing, a sustainable solution, is at the core of the concept. Thanks for the inspiration!
IS THIS SOMEONE I KNOW
HUGH gets my vote! This is just the sort of shop we need in Downtown Detroit!!! Go Joe!
Detroit needs HUGH. There aren’t many good places to wear smoking jackets anymore. Really!
Thanks for the love everyone! It’s really great to hear all the supportive words, and it’d be fantastic to have Hugh open again downtown!
Don’t forget – even though Hugh is “bachelor pad style” there’s something to appeal to everyone, ladies included! Plus wouldn’t a little more old-fashioned retail be a great thing in Detroit?
Keep up the good work!
Best of Luck Joe.!!!- You are gettin my vote every day.!!
