OVERVIEW
Did you know that the City of Detroit has been devoid of anyone selling bagels until very recently? Who knew? That’s where The Detroit Institute of Bagels comes in!
We will open a bagel bakery, the Detroit Institute of Bagels (DIB), in Detroit. We will make real, boiled and baked, bagels and offer all the standard bagels along with mouthwatering small-batch creations such as bacon cheddar and rosemary-olive oil-sea salt bagels. Our storefront will be a great place to grab a dozen for Sunday brunch, or grab a great bagel sandwich for lunch, or munch on a small-batch bagel while working at your mobile office.
Our idea will work because Detroiters are starved for bagels. There is no other bagel shop in the entire city, but as we’ve seen, through selling from our house and at Eastern Market, there is enough demand to sustain several bagel shops. Also, our combination of great tasting standard bagels with one-of-a-kind varieties will drive many customers from both inside and outside of Detroit. With great tasting food, great service, and exclusive products, the DIB will be another piece to retail revitalization in Detroit!

THE TEAM
The Bagel Brothers
Ben Newman has a Masters of Urban Planning degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In addition to his education, he has experience working in successful food and beverage start-ups such as Short’s Brewing Company in Bellaire, Michigan. He is actively involved in helping other Detroiters start their own food businesses in the city. He is passionate about food businesses and their potential to create desirable places to live.
Dan Newman attended the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In addition to managing the business side of the Michigan Daily, he has taken classes on entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, and management. He has interned at Zingerman’s Training, learning about the philosophies of Zingerman’s Deli through their customer service and staff training classes.
Both brothers moved to Detroit at the beginning of March 2011. As bagels grew, Dan left a finance position at an Ann Arbor non-profit, and Ben realized he could make the most impact at this moment in the city through opening a food business.
