Tashmoo Biergarten
Tashmoo Biergarten is a European style outdoor beer garden that opened in the fall of 2011 as five sequential pop-up events in the West Village neighborhood of Detroit, MI. The next phase of Tashmoo Biergarten is to purchase property with enough space for the beer garden and a building to house a tasting room and the necessary facilities.

The Details…
Tashmoo. An early 20th century Great Lakes steam ship. A former amusement park on Harsen’s Island. An American Indian word meaning “meeting place.” Plenty to talk about over a good bier. The atmosphere at Tashmoo Biergarten is family friendly featuring communal tables and benches, as found in traditional European beer gardens, made from recycled materials. The libations served are produced by Michigan microbreweries from across the state and local vendors produce the artisan foods served. Since it has opened Tashmoo Biergarten has brought over seven thousand people to West Village, raising awareness for the historical neighborhood and the proceeds from the events have gone to the Villages Community Development Corporation and the Waldorf School. The success of Tashmoo Biergarten demonstrates the demand in Detroit for a permanent three-season outdoor beer garden.
The West Village neighborhood is ideal for the beer garden due to a need for restaurant businesses in the immediate community and the surrounding neighborhoods are pedestrian friendly for potential business. The expansion of the Detroit River Walk to the Belle Isle Bridge along with future green way plans will allow for greater connectivity of bicycle and pedestrian traffic to the eastside neighborhoods. Building a permanent beer garden in West Village will help build up the neighborhood as a destination and will help drive further economical development in the Villages and the surrounding Eastside communities.
